Crescent-type fibulae like this one were used to fix the two parts of the traditional Tunisian costume, the draped dress. They were worn by women from nomadic tribes in the south of the country, in the region of Medenine and Tataouine.
The fish decoration has prophylactic and symbolic value, calling for the fertility of women, as in the whole Mediterranean.
