Antique Tuareg silver alloy Anklet. Currency Khalkhal, Mali.
Khalkhal are the impressive and often very heavy anklets traditionally worn by Tuareg women.
Jewelry, a form of moveable wealth, is well suited to the nomadic Tuareg lifestyle as it is easily transported from place to place.
Rich in amuletic symbolism, the anklets are engraved with symbols intended to ward off evil and to protect the feet from thorns and snakes; the large impressive knobs are believed to have the power to ward off the evil eye.
